Week 7, the start of the sentry gun

This week has been unusual to say the least, for a long time I had not really done much proper concepting that it was difficult to get back into the swing of things.

It’s a terrifying feeling to look at a blank mood board and have no idea what to do.

There is so much creative freedom with this project, so many ways I could go, yet I found myself unable to even draw a single silhouette.

One needs a more defined goal, a sentry gun is all well and good, but what style? Whom does it belong to? I believe it’s one of the hidden tasks in this project, one must direct one’s self and write a small brief to have some kind of direction.

My brief.

A turret owned by an extravagant, flamboyant and rich arms dealer in a more technologically advanced roaring 20s, a large amount of detail would have been put into how it looks. The design would have been heavily influenced by art deco, classic Sci-Fi’s (like Metropolis and Brazil) and vehicles/machines from that time.

This combined with some methods of coming up with ideas, such as just scribbling and drawing out designs from that much like looking at clouds and seeing shapes. Another method of coming up with ideas is simply a roll of the dice! Randomise all the information you need, who owns it? 1 for a rich widow, 2 for a brilliant commoner who just bungled the gun together, etc.

The silhouettes produced was the result of me following my own brief, admittedly there are a few that I feel are weaker than the others, but even then I used some of those elements and incorporated it into more successful designs.

Below are the silhouettes I came up with.

I ended up combining 16 and 12 to create my final silhouette. Hopefully next week I can have a model done.
